Molten Toffee _ I am obsessed

It was long past time I finally wrote a post about Molten Toffee, my favorite coffe shop in Cape Town.

best coffee in cape town, delicious fresh food, trendy hangout, centrally located, amazing customer service. Molten Toffee is the best eatery in cape Town

Located opposite the Spar on Kloof Street (45A), it is quite a new little hotspot. It was originally opened by two employees from Yours Truly just up the road, and is now owned by one of them. Molten Toffee is very trendy and unique. Definitely not your mainstream hangout. Be prepared for delicious fresh food and drinks and a great ambiance.

For breakfast, you can make your own by selecting ingredients from their generous variety. You can also try out their famous breakfast wrap or try something a little different like their egglets.

There is a real emphasis on home made products and high quality. Their home made granola is very popular and they plan on selling it soon by the bag- sign me up!

Their coffee is absolutely delicious, they have quite a range of different options but my consistent go-to is of course the flat white (errday!). They use ‘Deluxe’ coffee beans which are in my opinion one of the most flavourful kind.

For lunch you can once again customize it or choose from a mouth-watering menu of delicious sandwiches, salads and other concoctions.

If you’re not hungry, then try one of their freshly squeezed juices! The Green Juice is my personal favorite.

I can go on and on about their food and drinks but it’s just making me hungrier and hungrier…

The decor is rustic in a brown and copper color scheme making the hangout feel very cozy, yet ultra trendy. There’s some beautiful modern artwork decorating the walls and some great tunes on the speakers to string it all together. In fact, I love this place so much I’ve been working here all day and I’m even sitting here right now.

Finally, I’ve got to give it to the staff for making this place beyond awesome. They are the friendliest bunch, always making you feel more than welcome and special. 🙂

… Wait for it: they’ve got a membership card where after the purchase of 10 coffees you get 1 free! (I’ve noticed it also works for juices)

To summarize it up, Molten Toffee is my obsession and they make the best coffees in town!

A Taste Of Greece in Hout Bay

Spiro’s restaurant in Hout Bay transported us to the terrace of a Greek taverna somewhere near the beach.

The decor is very à-la-Grecque with blue and white walls and balustrades. Greek music was playing and of course, the menu was a full-on Greek fest.

I always find Greek food to be delicious and sometimes quite adventurous when it comes to things such as raw octopus… Their menu is so diverse so no matter what your palette is craving, you will definitely find it!

We chose to go for lemony chicken Souvlaki with homemade fries and a wonderful homemade tzatziki with a side salad.

Everything in this dish was superb: The chicken with its lemon dressing was perfectly cooked and bursting of flavor, the fries were also very well done and presented in an adorable way, and the tzatziki was fabulous with perfectly balanced flavors, taking the first prize home!

Such a satisfying meal. Some Greek food I would definitely recommend!

Cycling: Camps Bay to Chapman’s Peak

After a weekend attending the Cape Town Sixes next to the Greenpoint Stadium, a social cricket tournament which Mike and his friends were participating in, we decided it was time to take the road bikes out for a beautiful Sunday ride.

We started from our home in Camps Bay and decided to go all the way to Chapman’s Peak, right before you get to Noordhoek, and back. The ride was stunning with breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline and ocean. The weather was sublime for a bike ride, it wasn’t too hot, a bit cloudy and just right.

We cycled up to Llandudno, past Suikerbossie, through Hout Bay, then up and up to Chapman’s Peak. We stopped on top of the mountain for a quick break to absorb the magnificent landscape and inhale the crisp fresh air.

On our way back we thought of stopping at the Hout Bay market (open on weekends, I definitely recommend going there!) but thought again and decided to take on the strenuous hill out of Hout Bay and then cycle all the way back to Camps Bay. (Better to make a physical effort before indulging in yummy food)

Before heading home again we stopped at Kauai and grabbed a nutritious super-food smoothie.

Mike and I are both frothing for our next day off where we can do some more road biking. It was such a blast and we both continued the day with a great feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Cocktails at a Bakery: Knead

This is just a small post to boast about the AMAZING cocktails we tried at Knead the other day.

centrally located, knead is the best bakery in Cape Town. They also serve amazing cocktails, perfect on a hot south african summer's day

Typically not a bar or somewhere you would buy alcohol, Knead truly surprised us after a long hard day of work.

I usually always buy bread at Knead if I forgot to pack lunch: they have this amazing olive ciabatta bun which is definitely my go-to. Today however, we tried cocktails at a bakery.

We were very tired and had had a good sweat so our minds were both thinking of where to get an icy cold beer. And fast!
Then Mike remembered that the bakery across the road from work was advertising cocktails which we thought was quite funny. So the decision was made there and then: “cocktails at Knead it is!”. We were a bit sceptical but very curious and I am so glad we decided to go.

Mike ordered a Mojito and I got a Grapefruit & Mint-Gin & Tonic. I have no words to describe our surprise to the flavor held in these amazing drinks. The Mojito was stronger and made Mike think of Hoolah dancers, palm trees and the Carribean. My Grapefruit cocktail was the perfect Girl’s Drink you feel like dunking your head into and paddling around in. Perfect dose of sweet, perfect dose of tangy, perfectly delicious!

Enough words said 😉

Mesopotamia: A Kurdish Foodie Adventure

Mesopotamia is a great restaurant to try out if you’re in the mood for something a little adventurous and different. It is the first Kurdish restaurant in Cape Town. Expect the whole experience immersed in the kurd culture, sitting on the floor, listening to folk music, reading about kurd history, enjoying belly dancing and hubbly bubbly.

The menu boasts of delicious traditional kurdish cuisine. There is a huge selection of mezes and mains mainly incorporating lamb, chicken and vegetables. I would definitely recommend the suggested menu at R320 for two. This menu allows you to sample different mezes, six different mains and a traditional dessert.

~ Best of all worlds. ~

It was absolutely divine and perfect for a food lover who isn’t acquainted with this type of food. All in all we really enjoyed this dining experience. It was definitely something unique and worth a second, third and fourth visit!

Kommetjie Sunset hike

On a lazy Sunday afternoon we decided to go for a sunset hike as temperatures were reaching the high thirties that day. We didn’t want to go too far but wanted to do something different so Kommetjie mountain seemed to be the best choice. We had a little trouble finding the path I had planned to hike up so we found a hidden one a little further up the road instead. The ascent was very steep but there were ropes and steady rocks to assist the climb.

Once we reached the top the sun was starting to set. Kommetjie Mountain has also very recently been ravaged by wildfire so all the vegetation at the summit was burnt to ashes. There were no trails, but also no sign that anyone had been wandering up there in a while. We walked in what almost felt like desert and did a circular loop taking in all the gorgeous views from each side. The absence of human presence on the mountain was a blessing to us as we spotted some buck pouncing from rock to rock, and not a single footprint but ours in the sand below our feet. The sun continued to set and turned a vivid red.

We finally found our bearings near what seemed to be an abandoned military settlement, now overgrown with trees and decorated with murals of graffiti.

We took another much easier path down the mountain with views of the ocean, Slangkop lighthouse and the surreal pink sky and setting red sun. The heat still very present, we had the brilliant idea to finish the day off with a Magnum ice cream… Death by chocolate… Then finally off to bed.

Giovanni’s: Best Deli in Cape Town

If you are around Cape Town and happen to be in the Green Point area, you must make a point of stopping at this very trendy italian hangout.

Delicious coffees and freshly baked pastries are divine in the morning at the outdoor balcony bar as you enter the deli.

Once you walk into the door it is so easy to get lost amongst all the delicious food that is literally in display all around you. They have amazing deli salads and other goods like hummus and different patés.

Their ready-made meals ranging from fish, to poultry, to red meat and more, are perfect if you are in a rush or don’t have the time or energy to cook a nice dinner. They also have a fantastic selection of cheeses and hams.

The quality of their products is way beyond great.

There’s also a whole corner dedicated to a variety of artisanal breads and bagels etc.

My favorite thing to do is pick a bagel and give it to the counter where you can then instruct one of the ladies which ingredients you would like to have on your custom-made gourmet sandwich and they will make it for you.

My go-to, and obsession, is a poppy or sesame seed bagel with a fat layer of cream cheese and lots of smoked salmon with a generous squeeze of lemon to top it all off. There’s just not enough great things one can say about Giovanni’s.

Decadent Delheim

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway not too far from home, if you’re searching for gourmet food bursting of flavor, If you’re a fanatic for fine wines, and if you’re an avid MTB cyclist keen for an accessible stop offering luxurious refreshments… You’ve come to the perfect place: you’ve come to Delheim.

Delheim wine estate in Stellenbosch offers premium quality wine and gourmet 5 star food.

Lunch at Delheim wine estate was absolutely ravishing.

The drive up to the estate is on a beautiful winding road through countless flowers, wedged in the Simons Berg mountains.

Upon entering Delheim, we were greeted with a bowl of freshly picked grapes from the harvest of the day and some cold water, a blessing in the middle of a hot South African summer.

Our first impression of the venue was that of a perfect mix between Jungle; mystical forest; luxury; professionalism; and at the same time, warmth and comfort… according to my limited descriptive vocabulary. The estate holds a beautiful restaurant with a cozy and luminous outdoor balcony, a tasting room with a rustic feel to it, a gorgeous and peaceful picnic area in a meadow surrounded by trees and, cherry on the top of this decadent cake, a couple guest lodges for those who never want to leave…. A.k.a. ME

Meandering through the different parts of the estate, the vinegar smell of fermenting wine filled the air as we slowly made our way to the restaurant.5 start, gourmet fine dining experience in the Cape Winelands. Stellenbosch is renowned for its wine and gourmet restaurants.

We oredered two mains which we split between us, as has become our habit in order to get the best of both worlds… The first dish was a smoked salmon salad with caper cream cheese and freshly squeezed lemon accompanied by a glass of their estate rose. Let us all take a moment to remember, or in your case, imagine how tasty this dish was… I will just tell you how tasty it was if you are having trouble imagining… It was the best smoked salmon salad I have ever tried in my entire time of existence on Earth! The harmony between the flavors…. The wine…. It was exquisite.
And, I might just be a smoked salmon fanatic…

Then we tried the Cape Malay chicken curry with coconut shavings and home mande sambals and blatjang (chutney in Afrikaans). Again, what a wonderful and scrumptious dish. Contrarily to many top end restaurants, Delheim’s food is not served in miniscule “pretentious” tiny portions where too much is happening in such a small area of your plate and where you feel yourself wondering “Where’s the rest??”. Do not fear, If you are hungry, you will be satisfied.5 start, gourmet fine dining experience in the Cape Winelands. Stellenbosch is renowned for its wine and gourmet restaurants. Delheim’s menu only had about 6 different mains including an ostrich dish and a springbok loin. It was a small menu but assurably a menu of great South African taste and amazing quality.

Additionaly, the food was reasonably priced for the quality of the culinary experience that we had.

As for the staff, they were extremely friendly and helpful and especially very organized, efficient and professional.

Unfortunately we had no time for dessert but sincerely wish we had… In a way it’s a positive because that only means one thing:

We will have to return! J

Stellenbosch Single Track

Contrarily to the previous downhill mountain biking I have done in Vancouver where I would take the fun fun and adrenaline-rushing routes you can race down at maximum speed, this route on the other hand was a totally new and thrilling experience.

Before we hit the downhill I mentioned, we started cycling from Delvera Estate in Stellenbosch, through vineyards and on dirt back roads.

The sun was flaring that day and the ride was tough. We climbed extremely steep sections, keeping our eyes on the prize… Finally, dripping with sweat, we reached the top of where we wanted to go and our, well at least my, heart started racing as we saw the treacherous down-hill single track that lay before our wheels.

Mike was right in front of me, fearlessly swerving through and dominating all the rocks and bumps and stumps in his way. I on the other hand was a little more cautious as I didn’t really feel like falling flat on my face or straight down the hill for that matter… However as soon as the rocky bit cleared up a little and only a smooth switchback single track remained, I let go of my brakes and my need for speed was very satisfied! Sticky and feeling fabulous after the ride, we indulged in Dizzys Pizzas in Camp’s Bay and a delicious swim under the stars when we got home and it was dark….

Another Wonderful Day in Cape Town!
